If you are thinking of building a shed, and wish to do it as an owner builder, you can probably save yourself some money.
However there are some downfalls associated with that path.
Firstly, make sure you are not biting off more than you can chew. All those mates and relatives that have all done heaps of them before and are going to help you may be getting their free time confused with how much time they are actually willing to donate to you. And the guy who’ll just do it for cash may actually take ages just to give you a substandard job. What comeback will you have?
What about tools? Do you or they have what’s really needed to do it properly. I would estimate we have in excess of $40,000 worth of tools just to be able to build your shed in a proper and timely manner.
What about risk?
Falls from height account for 25% of fatalities (31 deaths) with ladders involved in 11 deaths, buildings in 7 and scaffolding in 7.
I’m not saying don’t build your shed yourself. What I am saying is be aware of the pitfalls. Make your decision based on actually thinking it through. Being able to do a couple of fixer uppers around the house is great but very different from the complete setout and construction of a new building.
Having said all that, and you entering into the decision to be an owner builder with eyes wide open, we’re happy to help you as much as we can.
The whole purpose of having a shed and a garage is so that you can enjoy it whilst it adds value to your property.
